Youth must be weaned away from narcotics - Minister

The drug menace must be wiped out from this country, if a society free of fear and suspicion is to be created Public Security Minister Rear Admiral Dr. Sarath Weerasekara said.

"The first step in achieving this goal is to stop drugs that are being physically brought into the country. This task is currently being carried out with the assistance of intelligence services and international organizations, he said.

“The second task is to reduce the demand for drugs.To fulfill this aim, an expeditious plan targeting schoolchildren needs to be implemented to prevent them from drug abuse.”Officials of the Education Ministry and organizations connected to the schooling community met Minister Weerasekara at his ministry recently.

Weerasekara said that strong committees should be created with the participation of school teachers, parents, student leaders to create awareness where society rejects those addicted to drugs. The Minister also said that children should be educated regarding the dire consequences of drug abuse.

Ministry Secretary retired Maj.Gen.Jagath Alwis, IGP Chandana Wickramaratne and many heads of institutions participated in this event.
