PM inaugurates Bellanwila Viharaya Bo -Tree preservation project

The ceremony to preserve the Bo-tree at the historic Bellanwila Rajamaha Viharaya commenced yesterday under the patronage of Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa.

With the blessings of the Maha Sangha, Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa took over the relics and the foundation stone of the Bodhi Wall and handed it over to Prime Minister’s Chief of Staff Yoshitha Rajapaksa.

Speaking at the event Bellanwila Rajamaha Viharaya Chief Incumbent, Dr. Bellanwila Dhammaratana Thera said that it was a privilege to start the conservation of this historic Bellanwila Bo tree by the leader who brought peace to this country.

Kotte Sri Kalyani Samagari Dharma Maha Sangha Sabha Deputy Leader Prof. Kotapitiye Rahula Thera delivered a sermon on the occasion and said that the Maha Sangha will continue to bless Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa, who is an unwavering leader in the face of challenges, to continue to work for the country no matter what anyone says.

Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa said that the Bodhi tree that resides in the Bellanwila Rajamaha Viharaya, which has been worshipped by devotees since the reign of King Devanampiyatissa is one of the thirty two saplings that sprang from the sacred Jaya Sri Maha Bodhi at Anuradhapura.

"It is essential that the wall of the Bo-tree be enlarged for offerings of devotees on the advice of experts and conserve ancient Bodhi walls and Bodhi trees. We believe that this will enable us to preserve this Bo tree for a long time.

"The walled courtyard should be enlarged to allow enough space for the gradual growth of the emerging shoots and roots of this Bo tree, which is a great spiritual resource of the Sri Lanka Buddha Sasana.

"We used visit the Bellanwila temple and worship here before an examination or such event. So we have such a connection with the Bellanwila Raja Maha Viharaya. Therefore, we would like to take this opportunity to pay tribute to the Chief Incumbent for preparing to build this temple with special interest.

The Chief Incumbent of the Kotte Sri Kalyani Samagari Dharma Maha Sangha, Prof. Kotapitiye Rahula Thera, the founder of the Bellanwila Buddhist Library and the Chief Prelate of the Bellanwila Rajamaha Viharaya Bellanwila Dhammarathana Thera, the Chief Incumbent of the Narahenpita Abhayaramaya, Western Province Chief Sanghanayake Murutthettuwe Ananda Thera and other Maha Sangha were present.
