Navy arrests three with Kerala Cannabis

The Navy managed to apprehend three suspects with over 16kg of Kerala cannabis during special operations conducted in Uduththurei, Jaffna and Uppukulam, Mannar.

Sri Lanka Navy is particularly vigilant over smuggling of drugs and other contraband via sea routes and conducting regular operations to thwart such attempts by smugglers. During a similar operation carried out in seas off Uduththurei, the Northern Naval Command was able to detect a suspicious dinghy reaching the Uduththurei beach where 02 suspects were held with 05 packages brought by the dinghy.

The packages contained 11kg and 905g of Kerala cannabis. Along with the 02 suspects the dinghy and cannabis were also taken into naval custody.

The Navy apprehended three suspects with over 16 kg of Kerala cannabis in Uduththurei, Jaffna and Uppukulam in Mannar on February 15.

During a similar operation in seas off Uduththurei, the Northern Naval Command detected a dinghy reaching the Uduththurei beach and nabbed two suspects with five packages of 11. 905kg of Kerala cannabis. Along with the two suspects, the dinghy and cannabis were taken into Naval custody. Meanwhile, the North Central Naval Command nabbed another suspect with 4.460kg of Kerala cannabis in Uppukulam, Mannar.

The street value of the Kerala cannabis is around Rs. 5 million.

The accused were residents of Point Pedro and Mannar. The suspects and the Kerala cannabis were handed over to Palei and Mannar Police.
