‘Societies to be set up at schools to save students from drugs’

Public Security Minister Rear Admiral Dr. Sarath Weerasekara said that anti-drug societies will be set up at schools to educate students about evils of drug addiction. Education Minister Prof. G.L. Peiris has agreed to give his full support to this worthy cause. Over 10,000 societies will be set up at government schools in next two months.

Parents, past pupils, prefects, school teachers and school heads, religious leaders, police officers and well-wishers in each area will be involved in this attempt. About 5,345 students who have been addicted to drugs and liquor have been rehabilitated during the past three years.

About 1,200 anti-drug societies will be set up in the Kurunegala and Puttalam Districts. Rs. 12 million will be invested by the Government in this regard, Kurunegala Education Director B.M. Blalasooriya said at a meeting of school heads of the Kurunegala District yesterday.
