Irrigation projects in Anuradhapura accelerated

The construction work of the irrigation projects in the Anuradhapura District will be accelerated parallel to the Wari Saubhagya (Irrigation Prosperity) programme by the Irrigation Department.

Irrigation Minister Chamal Rajapaksa has instructed the Irrigation Director General and Senior Irrigation Engineers to accelerate the Irrigation Development Projects as delaying these projects badly affects the economy.

Fourteen major irrigation schemes at a cost of Rs. 70,800 million will be accelerated. The Government has allocated Rs. 5,970 million for the project.

Supplying drinking and irrigation water, boosting agriculture and developing fresh water fisheries industry are some of the benefits that will be gained by completing the projects. Paying compensation for the properties acquired for the Yan Oya Reservoir Project is not yet finalized and only Rs. 2,600 million has been settled so far, sources said.

The head construction work of the lower Malwathu Oya Reservoir in Thanthirimale has not commenced although the foundation stone was laid two years ago. The Project costs Rs. 20,000 million. Rs. 200 million has been allocated from the budget in this regard but it is not enough to start head work construction, the sources said.
