Rise in road accidents, deaths

The number of road accidents in Sri Lanka has risen to 120 per day. The number of road accidents daily in Sri Lanka in 2019 was around 84.

Also 11 deaths were reported in the 24 hours ending at 6.00 am yesterday (16), police said. Nine of the deaths were from road accidents on the 15th, while two others were hospitalised due to previous accidents.

Five motorcyclists and four pedestrians were among the dead, Police Spokesman DIG Ajith Rohana said.

The police spokesman pointed out that 10 or 11 people die in road accidents every day, which is very high, and that people should be more vigilant to prevent accidents.

The number of injuries due to road accidents has increased to 40 per day and speeding, drunk driving and disregarding traffic signs have been identified as the main causes of these accidents, the Police spokesman said.
