SJB will challenge PCOI report in Court - Kiriella

Chief Opposition Whip Lakshman Kiriella said the Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB) will file a case in the Supreme Court against the Presidential Commission of Inquiry (PCoI) into Political Victimisation.

He said that despite a request to provide copies of the report of the PCoI on January 28, MPs have not received it.

Kiriella stated this at a media briefing held at the office of the Leader of the Opposition yesterday (16). He said that according to the Constitution of the country, the President is accountable to Parliament and therefore he has a responsibility to submit the relevant report to the Members.

“There is an accepted legal system in our country to punish anyone who has committed something illegal”.

Kiriella said that Maithripala Sirisena and Ranil Wickremesinghe, who were the leaders of the Good Governance Government which came to power in 2015, made it clear that there is an accepted legal system in our country to punish those who have committed political revenge or anything illegal through the police, the Attorney General’s Department and the judiciary.

Kiriella added that punishing political opponents through Commissions was an outdated and unacceptable process.
