No suppression of media – Mass Media Minister

The inauguration of the National Development Media Centre which was established to convey accurate information on Government policies and development efforts to the people was yesterday held at the Government Information Department under the patronage of Mass Media Minister Keheliya Rambukwella.

The Media center was launched to publicize the development facts and progress of the National Policy Framework “Vistas of Prosperity and Splendour”. It is being implemented under the guidance of Mass Media Minister Keheliya Rambukwella and will operate under the Ministry of Mass Media.

Speaking at the event Minister Rambukwella said that “The development of the country should be tied not to the Government. The development of the country is for the citizens. We must stop dividing that into parties or colours. Therefore, if there is a development issue of any kind, it is hoped that it will be answered promptly through this centre.”

Minister Rambukwella says that Government will not impose any restrictions on the media. There will be no media repression. He said that during the development process of the country, the people should be provided with the necessary information as well as answers to their problems.

“It is necessary to raise awareness nationally and internationally about the problems, as well as the positive situation, in the face of these challenges. Today, various controversies are being spread regarding the distribution of vaccines. Eighteen million doses have already been ordered for the country. By May, the programme will be somewhat successful,” he added.

Secretary to the Mass Media Ministry Jagath P Wijeweera, National Development Media Centre Director Milinda Rajapaksa and a large number of journalists from media institutions were present.
