Former mine clearing worker with TNT handed over to TID

The suspect who was arrested with a stock of TNT explosives in Nedunkerni, Vavuniya on Wednesday has been handed over to the Terrorist Investigation Division for further investigations.

The suspect was arrested by the Nedunkerni police following a comprehensive investigation into an alleged smuggling of explosives. Police found a stock of TNT explosives weighing over 21 kilograms, over 1 kilograms of PE1 explosives and 150 anti-personnel mines from his possession.

Preliminary investigations conducted on the suspect have revealed that the he had been working for a Non Governmental Organization and he has assisted the mine clearance operations in the Northern province.

Settikulam police on Wednesday found two suicide jackets buried in a forest reserve in Sinnathamanai. The recovery was made following the information received by the State Intelligence Service in Vavuniya.

The Police with the assistance of the Police Special Task Force found these jackets buried in the forest reserve. Police suspect that these suicide jackets may have been buried by the LTTE combatants during the last stage of the war in 2009.
