Brian Thomas released on bail

Cricket commentator Brian Thomas, who was in remand over defrauding Rs.134 million, was released on bail by Colombo Chief Magistrate Buddhika Sri Ragala yesterday.

He was released on a cash bail of Rs.25,000 and two sureties of Rs.500,000 each. The Magistrate also imposed a travel ban on him.

The CID had earlier informed the Magistrate that they had commenced an investigation into a complaint lodged by Dinesh Schaffter on March 20, 2019. The Criminal Investigation Department further informed the court that the suspect, while acting as an intermediary, had requested a sum of Rs.1.4 billion from a businessman with the aim of investing it in a well-known company in Sri Lanka.

Attorney Ashoka Weerasuriya appearing on behalf of the prosecution told court that the suspect had cheated the plaintiff in a sum exceeding Rs.100 million. Counsel further stated that the suspect had fraud charges against him levelled by a group of players in 1996 and that the suspect had defrauded another 15 suspects on various occasions.
