APPRECIATION: Vinitha Mendis - loyal, obedient, hard working

Horanage Vinitha Mendis nee Fernando is no more. She died after a brief illness at the age of 76. years. Her parents being Horanage Francis Fernando and Hikkaduwage Agnes Fernando and she hail from a very respectable family of Molpe, Moratuwa. Vinitha is the fourth of a family of ten children and she had four brothers and five sisters.

Vinitha commenced her schooling at Methodist High School, Moratumulla, Moratuwa and after passing her Ordinary Level Examination she joined Devi Balika Vidyalaya, Borella and entered the Colombo University in 1964. After Graduating from there she was trained as a Statistical Officer at Census and Statistics Department. After successfully completing her training she joined the Labour Department.

In 1974 she married Dilwin Mendis and during this period Dilwin was serving at Royal Ceylon Air Force and later Sri Lanka Air Force. She was awarded a Scholarship to the Edinburgh University, Scotland by the International Labour Organization.

After returning to Sri Lanka she was drafted to Labour Department of Labour Office Narahenpita from the Labour Office, Jawatta. Until her retirement in 2005 she served over there and retired as a Senior Assistant Commissioner of Labour.

I found her to be loyal, obedient, hard working, efficient, punctual and above all very honest up to her toes. Our family closely associated with Vinitha as we were living in close proximity to her office at Narahenpita.

There was no function at our residence without Vinitha and Dilwin. She was a tower of strength to my childhood friend Dilwin during their wedded life. Her departure is an irreparable loss not only to the family but everyone known to her. She leaves her only child Dinesh his wife Himali Nandika and grand children Amasha and Gavin.
