Work towards achieving SDGs - PM

Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa on Wednesday instructed relevant officials to systematically compile data on Sri Lanka and work towards achieving the Global Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) at the ministry level.

The Prime Minister was speaking at the inaugural meeting of the Steering Committee for SDGs at Temple Trees on Wednesday.

A Steering Committee headed by the Prime Minister has been appointed to expedite the SDGs by 2030.

The Sustainable Development Agenda includes 17 development goals and 169 targets.

Foreign Minister Dinesh Gunawardena explained the background and purpose of appointing the Steering Committee to expedite matters towards achieving the Goals.

Treasury Secretary S.R. Attygalle said that it is important for Sri Lanka to rise in the Global Sustainability Index.

Secretary to the Prime Minister Gamini Senarath said that the relevant Ministries will be briefed on the steps to be taken to streamline the relevant activities. Ministers, Secretaries to Ministries, the Sustainable Development Council Director General and a number of Government Officials were present.
