Madara a swimming star in the making

Madara Jayaratne, a Grade 13 student of Mahamaya Girls’ School ,Kandy is an outstanding swimmer who started her swimming career at the age of 10 years under the coaching of U.H.Sugath, a veteran swimming coach assisted by U.H. Pemlath. She secured the second place in Individual Medley event at the All Island Swimming Championship in the year 2011. In 2013 she won the second place in 50 Metres Backstroke and won the third place in the 200 metres Individual Medley event at the Novices Swimming Championship while securing the third place in the Under 12 Backstroke at the Sri Lanka Schools Aquatic Championship.Madara became the Champion Swimmer in the Under 12 age category at the Central Province Swimming Championship and the following year she finished ninth in the Pentathlon Swimming event and again in 2015 she was placed fifth out of 350 participants at the Two mile Sea Swim held at

Madara Jayaratne with her medals.   
 

Mount Lavinia which was held for the 78th year. Madara was placed third in 50 Metres Butterfly event and in 2016 she participated at the Two mile Sea swim for the second time and was placed third out of over 250 participants. In the Pentathlon event she was placed eighth in the top ten and she secured the third place in the 200 metres. Individual Medley event. In 2018 she became the Champion Swimmer in the Under 18 age category and she was placed 11th in the Open Category out of over 600 participants at the annual two Mile Sea Swim. She was placed third in the Individual Medley event and 100 metres. Freestyle event.

At the XLIV National Sports Festival in 2018 she was placed third in the Freestyle event and in the same year at the All Island School Games she was a member of the 4 x 4 M. Freestyle Relay event.

The other members were Lahini Costa, Maheshike Hewage and Devindya Jayawardena. In 2019 Madara was placed seventh at the 82nd Annual Two Mile Sea Swim in the open category and she came third in the 100 metres. Freestyle event at the Sri Lanka Schools Aquatic Sports Championship while at the All island Swimming Meet she secured the second place in 200 Metres Individual Medley and third in 200 Metres. Free Style events.

She is thankful to the Swimming Vice Captain and Asst.Games Captain and her swimming coaches for the guidance given to her and her ambition is to continue swimming while doing her higher studies to become a lawyer in the future.
