CA considers writ petition on Rambakan Oya forest

The Court of Appeal yesterday (19) decided to consider the writ petition filed by Veddha Chief Uruwarige Wannila Aththo and three others seeking an interim order to invalidate the acquisition of over 5,000 acres of their ancestral land in the Rambakan Oya forest by Mahaweli Development Authority for an agricultural and livestock development project involving private companies.

According to the petitioners, the Mahaweli Authority is set to distribute these lands among the private companies to cultivate maize.

The Court undertook to consider the petition of Wannila Aththo on March 5. The petition opposes the clearance of their native forest lands in Rambakan Oya.

The petitioners include the Centre for Environmental Justice and its Executive Director, W. D. Hemantha Sisira Kumara.

The respondents include Central Environmental Authority Director General P.S. B. Hemantha Jayasinghe, Mahaweli Development Authority Director General B. A. Sunil S. Perera, Director General of Forest Department, Director General of Forest Conservation, Director General of Wildlife Department, and the Attorney General.
