Sri Lanka, Oman celebrate 40 years of diplomatic relations

Marking 40 years of diplomatic relations between Sri Lanka and Oman, Foreign Minister Dinesh Gunawardena and his Omani counterpart Sayyid Badr bin Hamad Al Busaidi exchanged congratulatory messages on Wednesday, the Omani Embassy in Sri Lanka stated in a press release.

A special event was held at the Oman Foreign Ministry in Muscat to commemorate the occasion, where an agreement on mutual exemption of visa requirements for holders of diplomatic, special, service, and official passports was signed between Sri Lankan Ambassador to Oman O.L. Ameer Ajwad and the Omani Foreign Minister, the statement read.

Speaking at the event, Omani Foreign Minister Sayyid Badr bin Hamad Al Busaidi said that he looks forward to enhance the existing bilateral relations between the two countries, especially in the spheres of trade, culture, science, and tourism.

He said that the celebrations were testament to the longstanding ties between Sri Lanka and Oman, and reflected what is achievable through continuous cooperation. Busaidi said it was an honour to celebrate 40 years of diplomatic ties with Sri Lanka, which has shared with them mutual interests and understanding in the pursuit of prosperity.

The Omani Foreign Minister also conveyed his best wishes to President Gotabaya Rajapaksa and the people of Sri Lanka, the statement added.
