Ministry to set up 20 solar power plants

Power and Energy Minister Dullas Alahapperuma yesterday said that the Government will set up 20 solar power plants in various parts of the country.

The plants will be constructed under five packages comprising four areas per package. They will be centered on 20 grid substations.

The project is coherent with the Saubhagyaye Dekma under its cost-effective energy transition programme towards renewable energy, Ministyer Alahapperuma said.

The solar power plants will be installed in Anuradhapura, Madampe, Vavunathivu, Athurugiriya, Beliatta under the Package A; Beliatta, Horana, Polonnaruwa, Habarana under the Package B; Matara, Galle, Mahiyanganaya, Veyangoda under the Package C; Ampara, Deniyaya Kosgama, Matugama under the Package D and Pannala, Mahawa, Kurunegala and Kolonnawa under the Package E, inistry sources said.

"The plants will contribute to the national renewable energy grid," Minister Alahapperuma said.

"The National Grid will receive 70 per cent of power from the renewable energy sources by 2023," he said.
