The 4th ‘Annual Memorial Lecture’ of the Institute of National Security Studies (INSS) to commemorate the late Admiral Clancy Fernando was delivered under the theme, ‘Sea Power of an Island Nation and Admiral Clancy Fernando,’ on Friday.

Defence Ministry and National Security and Disaster Management State Ministry Secretary Gen. Kamal Gunaratne (Retd) participated in the ‘Annual Memorial Lecture’ as the Chief Guest and the former Navy Commander Admiral Thisara Samarasinghe (Retd) conducted the commemorative oration.

The Defence Secretary in his speech said that as citizens, we all must wholeheartedly endure and apprise that the defeat of the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) was the result of the dedication, commitment and ultimate sacrifice of fallen and living War Heroes.

The Defence Secretary recalled the Admiral Clancy Fernando’s legacy, his commitment in leading the Balavegaya operation together with General Denzil Kobbekaduwa and the landing of troops in Vettilakeni during the seaborne operation by the Navy,

Admiral Clancy Fernando was assassinated by the LTTE in 1992.

He is known as the most senior officer in the Sri Lankan Military to have been killed in the line of duty, General Gunaratne said.

“Remembering the selfless acts of fallen War Heroes such as Admiral Clancy Fernando for the betterment of the future generations, is a noble gesture that we can offer to such martyrs of the country,” he said.

The series of orations by INSS were delivered in 2017 to commemorate Lt. Gen. Denzil Kobbekaduwa, Maj. Gen. Vijaya Wimalaratne in 2018 and Colonel AF Laphir in 2019.

INSS Director General Admiral Prof. Jayanath Colombage (Retd) delivered the welcome address.

Chief Guest General Gunaratne presented a memento to Admiral Samarasinghe to symbolise the event.

Admiral Clancy Fernando’s son Nishan Fernando delivered the Vote of Thanks speech.

Family members, Public Security Minister Rear Admiral Dr. Sarath Weerasekara (Retd), Navy Commander Vice Admiral Nishantha Ulugetenne, Former Navy Commanders, Chancellor of the General Sir John Kotelawala Defence University, Additional Secretary (National Security), Commandants of National Defence College and Defence Services Command and Staff College, Commandant Special Task Force, Defence Advisors and Defence Attachés of Friendly Foreign Nations, Senior Military Officers, distinguished guests and INSS Staff Members were present.
