Representatives of farmers’ organizations and the Maha Sangha will commence a Satyagraha and a fast unto death campaign tomorrow (23) at Walasapugala in Suriyawewa.

They said Irrigation Minister Chamal Rajapaksa had not kept his promise to gazette the proposed wild elephant management zone in Hambantota.

Farmers’ Association Secretary Saman Sudarshana Minister Rajapaksa had previously promised to gazette the zone comprising 25,000 hectares within a month to resolve the issue of wild elephants.

Farmers in Walawa began a Satyagraha campaign on January 18, urging the Government to find an immediate solution to the human-elephant conflict in the area.

“Irrigation Minister Chamal Rajapaksa and officials visited the protesters and told them that within a month, a Gazette Notification would be issued in this regard and urged them to call off the campaign until then,” he added.

Meanwhile, the Socialist Youth Union (SYU) staged a protest in Suriyawewa in solidarity with the Satyagraha campaign of the farmers. Around 200 youth took part in the protest.
