Judge Sobhitha appointed to SPCoI

President Gotabaya Rajapaksa has appointed Appeal Court judge Sobhitha Rajakaruna to the Special Presidential Commission of Inquiry (SPCoI) on Political victimization.

The Presidential Secretariat in an Extraordinary Gazette published last Friday said Appeal Court Judge Rathnapriya Gurusinghe has resigned from the aforementioned Commission and Appeal Court Judge Sobhitha Rajakaruna has been appointed to fill in the vacancy. The three-member SPCoI is headed by Supreme Court Judge Dhammika Priyantha Samarakoon Jayawardena and Supreme Court Judge Khema Kumudini Wickremasinghe is another member of the Commission.

The SPCoI was appointed by the President on January 28 with Cabinet approval to follow up on the recommendations made in the report of the Presidential Commission of Inquiry into Political Victimization, which was handed over to the President on December 8, 2020.

The report consists of 3 volumes and 2,043 pages and it has investigated over 1,900 complaints of political victimization during the period between 2015 and 2019.
