Computer debacle in Galle schools

Mahindodaya Laboratories in the Galle District have 2,560 computers but 636 of them have been out of order for a long time, Southern Provincial Education Ministry Planning Director Nalika Dodampegama said.

The Planning Director was participating in a recent Galle District Rural Economic Development Committee meeting where Education Minister G.L.Peiris presided.

The labs have been set up at seven national schools and 30 provincial schools. They altogether received 2,560 computers and each received 60 computers. Of them, 636 computers are defective now, he said.

The buildings of many of the schools in Galle have been dilapidated. A large number have not been renovated for many years, Dodampegama said.

Many schools lack furniture. Therefore, students undergo severe hardships, she said.

Ministers Dr. Ramesh Pathirana, Mohan P. de Silva, Lasantha Alagiyawanna, Parliamentarians Shan Wijayalal de Silva, Sampath Athukorala, Isuru Dodangoda, Galle District Secretary Somaratne Vidanapathirana and many others were present.
