Iranathivu residents protest over COVID-19 burials

Residents of the Iranathivu islands along with a group of Catholic priests yesterday held a protest against the Government’s decision to bury COVID-19 victims on the island.

They said that over 160 families are presently living on the island and people belonging to 120 families come to the island as migratory fishermen.

They said that more than 160 families have been resettled in the island. The protestors said that the health of inhabitants in the island will be in danger if burial of COVID-19 victims is allowed on the island.

“This island is very small and there is a strong possibility of it being contaminated with the virus, if COVID-19 victims are allowed to be buried on the island,” they said.
