COVID-19 vaccination for over 60’s commences

The COVID-19 vaccination drive for those aged 60 and above was started yesterday with the arrival of vaccines under the COVAX facility.

The first consignment of AstraZeneca COVID-19 vaccines received through the COVAX facility of the World Health Organization (WHO) will be administered to those above 60-years of age, State Minister of Primary Health Care, Epidemics and COVID Disease Control Dr. Sudharshani Fernandopulle said.

The United Nations International Children’s Emergency Fund (UNICEF) on Sunday (7) delivered the first shipment of 264,000 doses of the Oxford AstraZeneca vaccine provided to Sri Lanka under the World Health Organization’s COVAX facility.

As per the statistics of the Epidemiology Unit of the Ministry of Health, Sri Lanka has already given the AstraZeneca vaccine to more than 729,562 people.

Meanwhile, the total number of patients receiving treatment for COVID-19 has been reduced to 3,134.

The total number of COVID-19 positive cases detected from the country reached 85,695 by yesterday morning and 82,059 of them have fully recovered.

Meanwhile, the country confirmed five more COVID-19 related fatalities on Sunday (7) raising the death toll from the viral disease to 502.
