Army women and CEB men victorious

Sri Lanka Army women and Ceylon Electricity Board men spikers won the Munchee National Super League Volleyball Championships 2021 respectively on Saturday which were played at National Youth Services Council Indoor Courts.

Women Soldiers defeated Sri Lanka Air Force by three sets to one (25-19, 21-25, 25-22, 25-22), while Ceylon Electricity Board beat the Bitu Link Sports Club three sets to one (25-22, 25-21, 22-25, 25-14).

The women’s final saw women soldiers comfortably win the first set 25-19 to make a big challenge to the Air Women. Soldiers came for the second set with high hopes of taking full control of the set and the game which was dashed off by the Air women when they fought gallantly to down the Soldiers 25-19 and came to equal terms to force a real challenge.

The never say die soldiers came for the third set to make things tough for their opponents. From the beginning of the third set, soldiers were seen on top collecting points regularly posing a threat to Flying women. During the latter half of this set Air women fought well to challenge their opponents but it was not sufficient and lost the set 25-22.

And Army took the most needed lead Army 2-1.

The fourth set too was evenly contested with Army winning the set 25-22 after a keen contest with Air Force women fighting until the finish. Though Air women fought well throughout the game they made few mistakes during the third and fourth sets which cost the game for them.

In the men’s final between Ceylon Electricity Board and Bitu Link, SC newcomers to a final of the National Championship saw CEB Volleyballers’ in full control winning the first two sets at 25-22, 25-21.

Bitu Link SC players sensing the difficulty they face fought a gallant battle in the third set which brought them good results to beat CEB (22-15) dashing the hopes of CEB having a clean sweep over them. CEB Spikers entered the court for the fourth set expecting a big challenge from their opponents and got off to a flying start collecting points easily to down Bitu Link SC 25-14 to take the set and the match and the 2021 National Volleyball title.

Thilini Wasana Perera of Sri Lanka Army was declared as the Most Valuable Player of the Championship, while in the Men’s category Ceylon Electricity Board’s B.A.C. Hirusha was awarded the Most Valuable Player’s Award.
