Rise in cancer patients in K’gala

Kurunegala Teaching Hospital Oncologist Dr. Dileepa Mahaliyana told the Daily News that the number of cancer patients in the Kurunegala District has increased by four fold in comparison to that of 2008.

He further said that the number of breast cancer patients too is increasing day by day. Women over 35 years are requested to attend breast cancer clinics conducted by the Wayamba Cancer Society in the hospital premises. All tests are carried out by female doctors. These clinics are held every Monday. He said the frequent occurrence of cancer is a result of socio-economic changes and unhealthy lifestyles. Tobacco consumption causes cancers in the lung, throat, mouth, pancreas, bladder, stomach, liver and kidney.
