Committee to identify reason for COVID-19 cluster at Sapugaskanda refinery

Minister of Energy Udaya Gammanpila has appointed a five-member Committee to look into how a COVID-19 cluster came to be among the employees of the Sapugaskanda Oil refinery, Ministry sources said.

The Committee has been appointed under the Chairmanship of Additional Secretary to the Ministry of Energy Chandika Athugala.

The other members of the Committee are Advisor to the Minister of Energy Lalith Wasantha, Ceylon Petroleum Corporation Managing Director Buddhika Madihewa, Senior Assistant Secretary to the Ministry of Energy Nayana Senaratne and Petroleum Storage Terminals Company Medical Officer Roshini Rusiriwardena.

The Ministry issuing a statement further said that the refinery maintenance which is run every three years is operating as usual. The appointed Committee is looking into whether any negligence on the part of the management had occurred or the improper implementation of health advice or any other factor had contributed to the spread of the virus in the refinery.

The Committee has been instructed to submit a report to the Minister of Energy within 10 days.
