Report sought on Peradeniya University financial scam

Education Minister Professor G. L. Peiris yesterday sought a comprehensive report from the University Grants Commission (UGC) over the alleged financial misappropriation running into Rs. 50 million at the Post Graduate Institute of the University of Peradeniya.

It has been revealed at the Committee on Public Enterprise (COPE) of Parliament that a financial irregularity running into Rs.50 million has allegedly taken place at the Post Graduate Institute of the Peradeniya University during the past few years.

Minister Prof G L Peiris has also directed the UGC Chairman Professor Sampath Amaratunga to look into whether such financial irregularities have taken place other universities and Post Graduate Institutes in the country. Ministry Secretary Professor Kapila Perera has also been directed to look into this issue seriously.

The Post Graduate Institute of the University of Peradeniya had maintained 14 fix deposits and the Institute had received Rs. 93 million on maturity. However, it was revealed at the COPE that the Senior Assistant Financial Officer of the Institute has fraudulently obtained Rs 50 million from the fund.

The Criminal Investigations Department has also initiated an investigation into this alleged scam.
