Scientific research for upgrading rural industries

Cane, Brass, Clay, Furniture and Rural Industry Promotion Minister Prasanna Ranaweera said that researches by the country's scientists will be taken to villages through Vidhatha Resources Centre to promote rural industries.

The team of researchers from the Department of Forestry and Environmental Science of Sri Jayewardenepura University has found that kaolin clay can be used for the Batik and Beauty Culture industries. A report on the research was submitted to the Ministry yesterday.

A Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed between Cane, Brass, Clay, Furniture and Rural Industry Ministry and the Sri Jayewardenepura University to introduce new value added products to the market based on the kaolin components in the soil.

Minister Ranaweera said that the latest technology on clay related products manufacturing industry will be introduced to rural areas to add value and standards for products.

The new technology has already been introduced to 15 rural industries.
