The motion by Prime Minister and Finance Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa to appoint a Parliament Select Committee (PSC) to identify appropriate reforms in election laws and the electoral system and to recommend necessary amendments will be presented in Parliament on Monday, April 5.

Secretary General of Parliament Dhammika Dasanayake said the motion will be presented by Foreign Minister and Leader of the House Dinesh Gunawardena at the time of adjournment that afternoon.

This Select Committee has 15 members and the motion states that the recommendations of the Committee should be submitted within six months after the appointment of the Select Committee made by the Speaker, the Secretary General said.

The responsibility of the Committee is to identify shortcomings of the existing electoral system and its structure and to make recommendations with regard to the amendments pertaining to the subject matter, the Parliament Communication Division said.
