Kandy’s chess promoter Ishan Wiratunga has been elected president of the Kandy YMCA He defeated his opponent by 7 votes to 6. Rest of the new committee members are Vice Presidents Harsha Vithnage, P.U.K. Bokkawela, Secretary Lalantha Jayaisnghe, and Treasurer Benjamin Arumugam. The newly elected chess promoter is a product of St Anthony’s College;who is a person who gives a big hand for sports especially chess. At school he took part in chess and athletics; he captained the Antonian chess team in 1991/92 season. After leaving school he started playing chess for YMCA in 1993 along with his school matesTiwanka Mallawarachchi, Kamal Kanumale and Asanka Tennakoon, at that time Wasantha Wettasinghe gave a big hand for YMCA chess. He is also a fine athlete and cricket umpire.

Kandy YMCA chess team became the national champions of inter club tourney organized by CFSL in 1994. Then again won another championship organized by the Colombo chess club in 1995. On both occasions Ishan Wiratinga won board prizes. Kandy YMCA organized an inter club chess championship in 1997 with over 40 teams joining. .

Then again in 2016 once Ishan Wiratunga became a board member of Kandy YMCA they resume playing chess.

Kandy YMCA became the runners up in the interim national chess championship in 2019. This is considered to be the oldest active chess club in Sri Lanka operative since late 1970s. The journey Ishan started at Kandy YMCA commenced in 1993 and in 2021 he became the president of this oldest society in Kandy which supports many sports

This year’s National Inter Club (Super League) Chess Championship which was held with ten teams in the fray out of which the one and only team from hill capital was Kandy YMCA , This time they were placed eighth , In the last tournament they were the silver medalists. ,. Kandy YMCA players like H..M.S.S. Hippola,Janith Wiratunga, C.Anurudha Galapaththi, Manushka Yatawala, Dhnushka Banda,A.S. Galagamarachchi and Shiraz Liaquath (Captain) have fared well.
