Discussions underway to solve illegal fishing issue: Douglas

Fisheries and Aquatic Resources Minister Douglas Devananda told the Daily News recently that he never made a statement about Indian fishermen being permitted to fish in Sri Lankan waters. He added that steps would soon be taken through bilateral discussions to solve the issue.

Indian nationals fishing illegally in local waters is a crime that has been a prevalent issue for a long time, and diplomatic discussions are in progress to find a solution, Devananda said.

A fisheries official said that until a final decision is made, the authorities are also looking into the possibility of providing temporary licences to foreign nationals wishing to fish in local waters, while limiting such activities to once a week. However, only a limited number of permits would be given, he added.
