Worker killed, three others injured in blast at scrap metal depot

One person was killed and three others were injured in an explosion at a scrap metal depot in Madola, Avissawella on April 2, Avissawella Police said.

The deceased had been identified as Arumugam Sundara Murthy (51), a resident of Puwakpitiya, Avissawella.

The explosion had occurred, while the workers were cutting iron. Only 19 workers were at the location at the time of the blast. Two of the injured have been admitted to the Avissawella Hospital, while one was admitted to the Colombo National Hospital.

Nadaraja Mohan Raj (40), a resident of Madola, Avissawella and Renshami Raj (41), a resident of Hingurala Kanda, Dehiowita are under treatment at the Avissawella Rural Hospital while Sathasivam Ganesh Murthy (23), a resident of Badulla, is under treatment at the Colombo National Hospital.

Parts of the blasted items have been sent to the Government Analyst. Avissawella Police are investigating.
