False propaganda has delayed Sinopharm vaccine

Health State Minister Prof. Channa Jayasumana stated that a political group working against the Chinese vaccine has spread false propaganda among the people.

He said the World Health Organization (WHO) does not approve vaccinations but lists them according to the data available for vaccinations. Due to the false propaganda carried out by these groups, members of expert committees studying this vaccine in Sri Lanka have been discouraged and as a result there has been a delay in administering the Chinese vaccine to Sri Lankans.

He said that Sri Lanka had received 600,000 vaccines from the Chinese government at the request of President Gotabaya Rajapaksa and only Chinese nationals in Sri Lanka have been approved to be vaccinated.

He also said that in order to give the Chinese vaccine to the people of this country, it is necessary to obtain expert recommendations and data in this regard.

He also said that MP Rajitha Senaratne’s statements regarding the Sinopharm vaccine could not be taken into account at a time when the world recognized that the vaccine was safe for the people.

He further said that an order of one million vaccines had been placed with the Indian Government and that diplomatic discussions had been held to obtain them and hoped that Sri Lanka would receive the vaccine in the next few weeks. The State Minister also said that preliminary work has been done for its import.

Corona quarantine laws introduced by the health sector will be strictly enforced during the upcoming festive season, he added.
