All must receive second jab as planned - JVP

Former JVP MP Dr.Nalinda Jayathissa said the government should have adequate AstraZeneca vaccines stocked for the second jab.

Those who received the first jab should be given the second dose after April 19 and the country does not have adequate stocks. “The government must intervene to ensure that they receive the second jab without delay,” he said.

He added that vaccination was the best option available to protect from the virus. “Sri Lanka has received 1,264,000 vaccines from India and 500,000 of them was received as a grant and the rest was purchased from the Serum Institute that produces the vaccine.

“There is an issue over the Chinese vaccine and the question arises whether this vaccine has received World Health Organization approval,” he said.

He said the political authority in the country cannot take a decision with regard to the mass roll out of a vaccine and such decision has to be taken by the National Medicine Regulatory Authority that has experts in the medical field.
