Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB) MP Nalin Bandara responding to summons issued to him, appeared before the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) to record a statement yesterday.

Speaking to the Daily News SJB-MP Mujibur Rahuman said that MP Nalin Bandara had been questioned for around 3 ½ hours yesterday. The MP was accompanied by SJB and Opposition Leader Sajith Premadasa and several other MPs.

MP Bandara was summoned before the CID to record a statement on the recent comments made by him regarding the 2019 Easter Sunday attacks and mentioning the name of SIS Director Maj. Gen. Suresh Sallay insinuating he had links with the suicide bomber in Malaysia while he was deployed at the Sri Lankan Embassy there.

The summons was issued based on a complaint filed by the Director of the State Intelligence Service (SIS) Major General Suresh Sallay.

He has lodged a complaint with the CID stating that MP Nalin Bandara has made baseless and false statements regarding him.

MP Bandara had made a statement during a media briefing on 17th March, claiming that Major General Sallay had been in contact with the mastermind of the Easter attacks Zaharan Hashim.

Sallay denied these allegations as absolutely false and said that he had never met Saharan Hashim under any circumstances. Further, Nalin Bandara had alleged that Sallay had facilitated Hashim to travel to various countries including Malaysia, India and Indonesia prior to the 2019 Easter bombings in Sri Lanka. MP Bandara had also claimed that although Sallay was aware of Zaharan Hashim’s activities, he had not been summoned before the Presidential Commission investigating the Easter Sunday attacks.

However, Major Gen. Sallay has said in his complaint that this information given by MP Bandara is completely false and misleading, adding that he had been summoned before the Presidential Commission on three occasions and had given statements. Sallay said that the statement made by MP Bandara at the press briefing is absolutely false and baseless. Therefore, Maj. Gen. Sallay has requested a full investigation by the CID.
