UNFPA - HelpAge conduct programme to assist elders in South

The United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) and HelpAge Sri Lanka(HASL) recently launched a series of training programmes for elderly citizens in the Southern Province on important precautionary measures that should be taken during emergency situations.

The main objective of the programme is to focus attention towards strengthening the disaster preparedness capacity of elderly citizens and also the building capacities of Senior Citizen Committees (SCC) in these vulnerable areas that are prone to natural disasters.

The UNFPA and HelpAge visited Welivita, Divithura, Niyagama, Thihagoda and Mulatiyana in the Southern Province to train personnel on important rescue operations and first aid treatment that should be carried out during emergencies such as flood situations, heavy rains, earth slips and thunder storms.

At least 200 members in elder societies, 160 representatives of voluntary organizations and also 160 government officials participated in the three-month training programme conducted with the assistance of four heads in the respective Divisional Secretariats.

HelpAge, Programme Manager Chanminda De Silva demonstrated to participanting officials how to rescue victims during floods and emergencies in areas where elders live.

HelpAge Executive Director Samantha Liyanawaduge said HelpAge Sri Lanka has been at the forefront of creating a better safer environment for Sri Lankan elders by implementing many social service programmes and projects.He said under this project needy elders will be provide with wheel chairs, walkers, beds and first aid boxes with medicines that can be used during disaster situations, “Our flagship programme is to perform cataract surgeries for underprivileged elderly citizens free of charge at HelpAge Eye Hospital at Sinsapa Road in Wellawatte, Colombo 6,” he added.
