SLSI DG’s utterances on food safety will be probed - Minister

The government is conducting a full investigation into the statement made by Sri Lanka Standards Institute (SLSI) Director General Dr. Siddhika Senaratne on food items that allegedly contain aflatoxins.

Co-Cabinet Spokesman, Mass Media Minister Keheliya Rambukwella speaking at the Cabinet media briefing held yesterday at the Government Information Department stated that the import of coconut oil in this manner could have been going on for a long time and the government has decided to look into the matter with greater urgency.

Commenting on the gazette notification issued to stop the importation of palm oil, the Minister said that the gazette notification could be changed in the future as the price of coconut oil in the local market could go up due to this gazette notification. He said the government will discuss with Sri Lanka Standards Institution officials with regard to the statement made by the Director General and an inquiry will be held in the future regarding the full statement made by the Director General.
