Udeshika Madhumali a fine sportswoman

Udeshika Madhumali, an old girl of Mahamaya Girls School,Kandy is an athlete, netball player, cricketer and karateka and she was at the school from the year 2005 to 2019. Solidly built Madhumali started her career as a Karateka in 2008 when she was a student of the grade four class and her coach was Aruna de Zoyza. After some years of training she became a Brown Belt in Karate and continued the game till she received the Black Belt in Karate. As an Athlete she won the Shot Putt and Discus throw events for a number of years at school level.

Udeshika was a talented Netball player who played the game under two teachers of the school, Ms. Thisera and Pradeepa. She played as the Goal Keeper and her team mates were Pubudu Marasinghe, Ruvinya Malporu,and Thiroshi Pathirana to name a few. She was played netball from the year 2008 to 2015 and during this period Mahamaya became Central Province runners-up on many occasions. She played cricket under the coaching of the writer assisted by E.M.U.Chandrathilake, a veteran cricket coach in 2016 and as a batswoman and a right arm medium pace bowler she helped the cricket team of Mahamaya to become champions in many tournaments. Udeshika participated at the Kandy District Cricket tournament from 2017 to 2020 organised by the Education Department. of Kandy District and as an attacking batswoman she scored two half centuries at the hard ball cricket tournament held in 2017 by the Sri Lanka Womens Cricket Association

As a Bowler Udeshika showed her class and claimed three wickets in a match and continued her fine form in the other two cricket matches by claiming three wickets against St.Anthony’s Girls School and four wickets against Wattegama Maha Vidyalaya in 2018. In the same year she was appointed as the captain of Hard Ball cricket team and she led the team successfully in many tournaments.

She left School in 2019 but she is continuing her sports career and in cricket she has joined the Cricket and Athletic Academy of Kandy district and takes part in karate,athletics and netball.
