Proposal to absorb provincial scribes to Wages Board for Journalism

Minister of Labour Nimal Siripala de Silva has proposed to absorb provincial correspondents and journalists who play a major role in the field of journalism in the country to the Wages Board for Journalism.

The Minister recently informed the Commissioner General of Labour Prabath Chandrakeerthi to take the necessary steps in this regard.

The Minister also told Chandrakeerthi to change the structure of the Wages Board related to Journalism to include television, radio and web journalists in addition to the print media journalists, a Ministry Spokesman said.

The Wages Board related to the journalism sector has so far only included journalists from the print media.

Minister de Silva was speaking with a group of representatives from the Media Trade Union Federation at the Ministry recently.

The journalists had requested the Minister to intervene to give them some kind of professional status and also to initiate a social security programme for their professional and future economic security.

The media representatives had pointed out that there was no specific social security plan for the future security of local journalists as well as corporate staff, especially those working in private media institutions.

Minister Nimal Siripala de Silva had said that already discussions had been initiated to absorb provincial journalists to the EPF/ETF Fund.

He also said that a special discussion with the heads of media institutions in this regard will be held soon with the participation of the Minister of Mass Media and Information.
