Government servants who were awarded plots of land in extent of 20 perches 34 years ago have been compelled to pay Rs. 1 million to obtain ownership deeds, said Hambantota Urban Councillor and Sri Lanka Podu Jana Peramuna (SLPP) Member Ajantha Rohana.
She was addressing the monthly meeting of the Hambantota Urban Council presided over by Mayor Eraj Ravindra Fernando. She said that these plots of land were distributed in 1987.
The Hambantota District Secretariat has informed the recipients of these land plots to pay Rs.1 million each for the issuing the deeds. When queried from Mayor Fernando about the plight of the land recipients, he said that this injustice would be brought to the notice of the relevant Minister and State Departments.
