Myanmar releases 12 Sri Lankan fishermen

Myanmar authorities have released 12 Sri Lankan fishermen arrested by Myanmar authorities for trespassing into their waters.

The Sri Lankan fishermen were arrested by the Myanmar navy last February and are being released as a result of discussions with the Myanmar authorities, the Sri Lankan High Commission in Myanmar said.

In addition to these fishermen, two fishing vessels were also seized by the Myanmar Navy and on several occasions the relatives of the fishermen have requested the Sri Lankan government to intervene in order to get them released as well.

Accordingly, Sri Lankan fishermen released from Myanmar will be repatriated to Sri Lanka shortly, a spokesman for the Sri Lankan High Commission in Myanmar said.
