SLSRFA seeks approval for Tag Rugby Tourney

The Sri Lanka Schools Rugby Football Association (SLSRFA) is to introduce Tag Rugby among the schools due to the non-approval of their regular 15-a-side Tournament.

This new proposal is to be submitted to the Ministry of Education early next month for their final approval.

The SLSRFA Tournament Committee after a series of discussions decided to introduce this popular format among rugby playing schools if the relevant authorities fail to grant the green light for their regular tournaments.

“Rugby has been listed as the fourth staged game by the Ministry of Health and so we are unable to pursue any tournaments,” Secretary of the SLSRFA, N. Wijerama told the Daily News yesterday.

“Our Tournament Committee had a lengthy discussion to imply justice for these children. As a result, we opted to introduce Tag Rugby which is played in the safe zone,” he added.

All schools will play in their respective divisions and the top two teams of the group will qualify for the knock-out stage.

With the GCE Advanced Level Examination scheduled for October, this tournament is likely to commence in June and to be concluded by August.
