Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa today in a phone call inquired into the health of former Maldives President and incumbent Speaker Mohamed Nasheed who survived an assassination attempt on May 6.
Speaking to former President Nasheed’s father, Prime Minister Rajapaksa wished Nasheed a quick recovery from the injuries sustained in the attack.
The Prime Minister’s Media Division said that PM Rajapaksa asked what help is required from him for Nasheed’s recovery. The release pointed out that Nasheed was the Maldives President when PM Rajapaksa held the Office of the President and both leaders had cultivated close ties.
Critically wounded after a blast which was blamed on Muslim extremists, Nasheed is now recovering in a hospital after multiple surgeries.
The Maldives Police said on Sunday they arrested a person believed to be the prime suspect in the explosion.
Two of Nasheed's bodyguards and two apparent bystanders, including a British citizen, were also wounded.
Nasheed has been an outspoken critic of religious extremism in the predominantly Sunni Muslim nation, where preaching and practicing other faiths are banned by law. He has been criticized by religious hard-liners for his closeness to the West and liberal policies.
