JVP wants BoC to provide information on LCs

The Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP) Member and former Provincial Councillor, attorney Sunil Watagala has written to the Bank of Ceylon (BoC) requesting information pertaining to opening Letters of Credit (LCs) to import vehicles for MPs.

The letter has been submitted as a request under the Right to Information Act. Watagala has sent the letter in his professional capacity as an attorney-at-law on behalf of his client former Western Provincial Councillor Mahinda Jayasinghe.

The JVP has questioned under what legal provision the LCs were opened before receiving Cabinet approval for the said move when the import of vehicles had been suspended in the country. The JVP points out that the LCs had been opened on April 22 whereas Cabinet approval for the said purpose was given on May 18.

The letter has been addressed to the BoC Chairman. The JVP has requested the State Bank to reveal who ordered it to open the LCs and the future course of action with regard to the LCs as the Government has withdrawn the decision to import those vehicles.
