A person who uploaded more than 500 images and videos of child pornographic content to Facebook, Viber, Whatsapp, and other social media networks was arrested in Badalkumbura over the weekend, Police Media Spokesperson Senior DIG Ajith Rohana said.
The suspect was produced before the Colombo Magistrate’s Court and was remanded until August 20.
He further stated that 10 more persons who had uploaded pornographic videos and photographs of minors on the Internet had been identified and investigations were underway to arrest them.
The relevant suspects will be dealt with under the Obscene Publications Act and the Penal Code, SDIG Ajith Rohana added.
Meanwhile, a Special Unit has been established at the Colombo Women’s and Children’s Bureau headquarters to monitor child pornography uploaded to social media and trace the suspects, Senior DIG Ajith Rohana said.
