JNP queries COVID-19 pandemic data

The actual data on the spread of the COVID-19 pandemic in the country seems to have been altered, Jathika Nidahas Peramuna (JNP) media spokesman Mohamed Muzammil told yesterday (13) morning.

Addressing a press brief Muzammil pointed out that a senior Army officer and two specialists in the Epidemiology Unit are supposedly involved in the said incident and requested Chief of Defence Staff, Army Commander and Head, National Operations Centre for Prevention of COVID-19 Outbreak (NOCPCO) General Shavendra Silva to look into the matter.“The Opposition is constantly talking about an increase in deaths. There are serious doubts as to whether the Opposition has taken up a contract to discredit the COVID-19 Task Force and the Government by concealing the findings of infected cases,” Muzammil noted.

Muzammil said that 5,415 COVID-19 cases were reported in the country on August 11 and more than 5,000 cases have been reported in the country since August 5.

“With the death of 156 persons yesterday (13), the death rate becomes 5.5% which is not probable,” Muzammil pointed out.

“If you take the Gampaha district, 4,000 COVID-19 positive patients have been admitted. However, the data comes in as only 3,000 persons. What does this mean? At present the death rate in the world is at the level of 3% and our 156 deaths is a serious data. For that to happen, more than 5,000 people a day would have to be infected. Also, I have received data which says that the number of daily positive COVID-19 cases exceed 5,000. The relative death rate of 5,000 infected should remain at 1% to 5% percent.

But there seems to be some sort of a conspiracy here over our death rate which seems to be exceeding 5.5%,” Muzammil noted.

Muzammil also noted, “The Opposition says that the programme to prevent the pandemic is a failure. However, by now the Government has brought all the available vaccines in the world to this country. Successful vaccination programmes are also being carried out.”
