Focus on revenue generating transport projects - Minister

Transport Minister Pavithra Wanniarachchi yesterday stressed the importance of formulating an urgent programme to generate new income avenues through the existing and new projects in the transport sector to revive the country’s economy affected by the pandemic.

The Minister made these remarks during the meeting held with Ministry officials and heads of all the institutions coming under the Transport Ministry yesterday.

The meeting was convened to discuss on going development projects and the proposed new projects through Sri Lanka Railways, Sri Lanka Transport Board, National Transport Commission and National Council for Road Safety and preparing estimates of budgetary allocations for 2022.

The development of several projects like the Kelani Valley railway line from Maradana to Avissawella, the main line from Maradana to Rambukkana, coastal railway line from Maradana to Kalutara and the Puttalam railway line from Ragama to Negombo have been prioritized through the 2022 Budget as main revenue generating avenues.

In addition to this, expediting construction of the Kurunegala-Habarana railway line and the Mahawa-Omanthai railway line is also in the plan.

It is estimated that around Rs.11,865 million is needed to implement these projects included in the 2022 Budget.
