Education Minister Dinesh Gunawardena yesterday stated that the Government has decided to eliminate salary anomalies in Teacher-Principal Services under several phases within the next four years.

Speaking at the weekly Cabinet media briefing held yesterday at the Government Information Department, Minister Gunawardena said the matter remained unresolved under multiple regimes for nearly 24 years and this decision to provide a permanent solution for the salary anomalies issue of the Teacher-Principal Service has been taken after considering the recommendations of the Cabinet Sub-Committee on the elimination of salary anomalies in these services.

The Cabinet Sub-Committee was appointed to look into the elimination of salary anomalies in the Teacher-Principal Services and to make suitable recommendations to the Cabinet of Ministers. Accordingly, the Sub-Committee has discussed with the representatives of 33 Teachers, Principals and Teaching Instructors’ unions and made its recommendations.

The Cabinet of Ministers gave its consent to grant policy approval to implement the recommendations of the Cabinet Sub-Committee. Approval has also been granted to issue a gazette notification before November 20, 2021 declaring the Teachers’ Service, Teacher Advisory Service and the Principals’ Service as a “Closed Service” and also to implement the salary revisions recommended by the Cabinet Sub-Committee to eliminate the salary anomalies of teachers and principals, in a number of stages through a 2022 Budget proposal.

Cabinet approval has also been granted to approve a special allowance of Rs.5,000 for teachers and principals on duty in September and October 2021and also to take necessary measures by the Education Ministry in collaboration with the Provincial Councils and other relevant authorities to implement the other proposals of the Sub-Committee within a six month period.
