Five suspects in the vessel were also arrested and brought ashore yesterday morning (31). The Navy detected and searched a suspicious multi-day fishing trawler heading landward, based on information received from a coordinated intelligence operation led by Sri Lanka Navy Intelligence and other intelligence services. The interception led to the recovery of the heroin haul stuffed in 10 sacks concealed in the vessel.

The multi-day fishing trawler had ventured out to sea on July 30, and it is suspected that the consignment of narcotics was fetched to the trawler from foreign smugglers in international waters. The street value of the seized consignment of heroin is believed to be over Rs.2,321 million.

The operation was conducted adhering to COVID-19 protocols.

The suspects held during this operation were identified as residents of Ahungalla, Balapitiya and Habaraduwa in the ages of 31 to 37. The Navy and Police Narcotics Bureau are conducting further investigations.
