Ministry to monitor Oxygen supply to COVID-19 patients

Health Minister Keheliya Rambukwella yesterday (01) instructed the Ministry officials to monitor the supply of Oxygen to the COVID-19 patients in every hospital in the country on a daily basis and take appropriate action.

The Minister instructed to take all possible measures to provide Oxygen to all patients in need of oxygen without any shortage and to adopt the most appropriate measures through health and technology methods.

Secretary to the Ministry of Health Major General Dr. Sanjeewa Munasinghe and Director General of Health Services Dr. Asela Gunawardena were also present at the discussion. The Minister said that no patient should be allowed to die without Oxygen and that all necessary steps should be taken in this regard.

The Minister pointed out that the daily requirement of Oxygen is still being looked into and that it should be made more efficient and that there should be constant monitoring of the increase and decrease in demand. The daily Oxygen production in the country is 80 tons and the demand for Oxygen is increasing beyond that level. Accordingly, the demand for Oxygen in the country was between 20 and 25 tons before the COVID-19 pandemic and it has reached a higher level by now. By now, steps have been taken to import Oxygen from countries like India and Singapore.
