Pulina Tharanga could be an asset for Sri Lanka at Twenty20 World Cup

Pulina Tharanga, the 28-year-old leg-spin bowler, is the latest addition to the National cricket squad for the South African cricket series. The product of Sri Devananda College Ambalangoda is the find of the recently concluded SLC Invitational T- 20 cricket tournament.

Tharanga fared reasonably well for the victorious Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) Greys team in the recently concluded SLC Invitational T20 League at Pallekele, during which the selectors picked the 22 member National squad.

Tharanga took seven wickets in six matches in that League at an average of 19.44.His fielding and bowling was outstanding during this tournament .He took an excellent catch to dismiss Avishka Fernando in the final which was the best catch of the tournament.

Tharanga has so far played in over 90 white-ball matches at the domestic level taking over 70 wickets with his leg-break bowling at 19.05. He has scored over 1,200 runs, at an average of over 21 runs per a match.

The useful all-rounder could be an asset for forthcoming Twenty20 World Cup.

Tharanga, lost both his parents in the December 2004 Tsunami when he was 11 years old and his grandmother brought him up and did everything for Tharanga duringi his school days at Sri Devananda College, Ambalangoda before playing for many first-class clubs including Singha Sports Club, Tamil Union, and presently Chilaw Marians.He also got a chance to play the last LPL tournament.

Tharanga had been under the care of the Foundation of Goodness (FoG) at Seenigama off Hikkaduwa down south, since he was 11 years old and that was the turning point of his life.

Tharanga was on an MCC (Marylebone Cricket Club) scholarship programme since the time he came under (FoG) care. By 2012, he reached a standard where he could represent Sri Lanka in the Under-19 World Cup.

FOG Founder and Chief Trustee Kushil Gunasekara noticed Tharanga's talent and paved the way for him to get more success during his cricket journey.Ramesh Mendis and Tharindu Kaushal the two National spinners also came under FOG care to the National level.
